Rescue Circles Part 37 Awareness of the inner planes, or the Spirit World, makes transition easie

Much rescue work would not be necessary if we
were all aware of the fuller spirit reality of life.
The way we die, whether violently or peacefully,
wouldn’t confuse those of us who were already aware
that we are in part spirit even as we live on earth.
We would have developed our awareness enough to know
what was happening, and just continue to develop the
spirit life and contacts we had already met up with in
our trance states, in sleep, dreams, OOBEs, NDEs and
in other psychic experiences. Facing death would be
much easier for us also if our religions had taught us
more facts about our spiritual nature and the reality
of the spirit worlds, but they are either uncertain or
ignorant of them, or so divided in their teachings as
to what actually happens after death that no definite
picture can emerge.

This point comes out in a discussion between
Stewart White in spirit talking with Robert Leichtman,
M.D. (Iowa) through the mediumship of David Kendrick
Johnson. Here are a few excerpts from “The Psychic
Perspective” which includes conversations with Edgar
Cayce, Eileen Garrett, Stewart White and Arthur Ford.
The book is recommended reading for developing mediums
as well as for those genuinely interested in the truth
of our spiritual nature. Stewart was husband of Betty
White the medium, of “The Betty Book” fame and “The
Unobstructed Universe” in which she communicates after
her death through the mediumship of “Joan” of the
Darby and Joan partnership who wrote the classic book
on the challenges of communicating with the other
side, “Our Unseen Guest”. The four of them together
were linked spiritually beyond the present lifetime
together with Margaret Cameron, author of “The Seven
Purposes.” All these books are still relevant to
present-day practice and research, although written
from 60 to 90 years ago, and are now available on the
Internet. Betty White the medium was not related to Betty White the present-day television actress of "Hot in CLeveland" and "The Golden Girls" fame. "Joan" the medium was the pseudonym for journalist Ruth Linley who wrote for The Cleveland Plain Dealer and other journals.

WHITE Too many people forget that even while they
are incarnate in a physical body, they are also a
HEWITT (another sitter) Is one’s spiritual body
largely determined by a person’s character?
WHITE By your character as developed over several
lifetimes and several interludes on the other planes.
This is the character of the immortal part of you.
…..It’s very unpleasant to “see” elements such as
greed and materialism in the spiritual body of people,
because….. you interact with them… are being
touched by the unpleasant elements themselves. ….Many
of these very materialistic people literally project
psychic tentacles from their solar plexus, which they
use to grasp the objects of their greed or lust. They
come looking for you. They reach out psychically and
drain away your energy. This is the invisible part of
greed and lust; people don’t ordinarily see it. It’s
the tendency to be very self-centered which leads
these people to want to take your energy….It’s the
astral body that preserves the unpleasant elements of
character, and it’s the body that the clairvoyant is
perceiving when he or she reads an aura or “feels” and
impression. [This negative energy in only one person
in a group can quite disrupt a sitting or circle work,
in my experience. Richard R.].
As long as I am inhabiting David’s (the medium)
physical body (to talk to you) I am also inhabiting
part of his astral body. But he is using an aspect of
his own astral body, too. As you know, the astral
body can subdivide and be in several places at the
same time. I have to use part of David’s astral body
because otherwise the physical body would not
The term “spiritual body” is not meant to
describe the body of any one plane. It can be used to
refer to any of the inner bodies. The inner essence
of a being is not related to a specific plane, because
we live on more than one plane simultaneously.
Most people are unaware that they live on the
finer planes as well as the physical plane. The
trained psychic can move back and forth with ease, but
this is a skill which has to be developed. The
ordinary person doesn’t have it, because he has never
acclimatized himself to the fuller dimensions of
reality. Then, when he becomes a citizen of the inner
planes, he can have difficulty in getting around
[which points out the need for rescue circles and
guides and helpers as shown in our series. R.R.].
Some of these people remain in the vestibule
quite awhile (as we’ve seen in past rescue episodes).
They almost have to be taught how to walk again,
because the adjustment is so difficult. But for
physical people who have an awareness of the inner
planes, or who prepare themselves for the transition,
the period in the vestibule is very short. There is
an immediate example here. Colene’s (a sitter)
grandmother made a very quick adjustment to being on
the inner planes, and was even able to attend her own
funeral. It was just a matter of hours for her to
make the adjustment to moving around on the inner
planes. [other historical examples of a speedy spirit
return after death were Conan Doyle, and Lord
Northcliffe, and some on the List have written of
their loved ones returning almost immediately, or of
their having brought through for sitters those who had

We will leave that discussion of the higher
spiritual bodies for now, the so-called etheric and
astral bodies, and the higher mental, transcendent and
infinite bodies of the higher planes, and return to
the personal accounts from spirits describing their
In the previous “Rescue Circle” article we paused
during an account of a lady who decided to return to
visit the earth plane after her death, against the
advice of her guides and helpers. She must have
stayed earthbound until fifty years later when she
found her way to a public meeting in Zurich, where she
was able to tell her story. After that she probably
moved back to the spirit worlds and started on her
real spiritual progress.
Her life review given in the previous post was
made in terms of a judgment assessed by higher
guardians. This is probably because she was a
Christian, and the meeting was held by a Christian
Spiritualist group. If she had belonged to another
religion, the life review would have been the same,
as regards her “harvest” or evaluation of the quality
of her life, but described in the terms and imagery of
that other culture and religion. I think, in reading
any of these accounts of the spirit worlds, we need to
have our own idea of the other side fairly secure in
our own mind, from our own experience, reading and
study, and then see how the account we are looking at
or listening to compares…making parallels, and
equivalences. Now here is another account from
Switzerland. Translated and excerpted in “The Corner
Stone” by Professor Walter Hinz, Neville Spearman
Ltd. 1977. Professor Hinz makes the same point, that
“it is important to keep in mind the enormous variety
of life in the world of spirit. Each one must undergo
there his [or her] own individual experience; only the
main features are the same for all. In the case of
Adelheid, it becomes clear that we are dealing with a
spirit of average development.” [Richard R.]

ADELHEID I lived on earth…about a century ago. I
have lost my sense of time, just like my brothers and
sisters in the spirit world. We no longer concern
ourselves with the notion of time. And after such a
long period we are no longer greatly interested in the
place where we were born and grew up. We have become
detached from all that, especially as we are well
aware that our earthly lives did not come up to
heavenly expectations.
As for me, I made many mistakes in life. I do
not want to go into this, for it is always the same
with human beings: some are more to blame, others
less. I found it hard to grasp the fact that I was no
longer alive. My dead parents were brought to see me;
they welcomed and hugged me, expressing their
happiness at my having come home. But I was still
somewhat confused, and did not at first realize what
this “home-coming” implied. For everything I saw
reminded me so much of my life on earth: a village
here, a town there, houses with gardens, woods,
rivers. My surroundings looked almost the same as
those of my earthly existence.
So I couldn’t easily accept that it was no longer
possible for me to live as a human being. I certainly
gave this thought, asking myself: “In what way have I
really changed? How could I have met my parents, when
they have been dead for such a long time?” And then I
saw so many other people. I call them that, for that
is what they were as far as I was concerned. They
were dressed like human beings on earth; some had
perhaps taken more care with their appearance, others
showed signs of neglect. But all in all I noticed no
fundamental difference.
At this stage I began to wonder where I really
was, and what had happened to me. I tried to reassure
myself that nothing had changed: “The people, the
houses, everything is the same. So I cannot be
dead.” I remembered that I had been ill and had
planned to go away to convalesce as soon as I was well
enough. I had friends in the country whom I had
wanted to visit. Could I somehow or other have
reached them? But my surroundings seemed unfamiliar.
Could I, without knowing it, have changed my mind? In
effect, I was once more alone. I knew nobody, and
the people who spoke to me behaved as though they were
in a tearing hurry, for they always disappeared
immediately afterwards. So I was left to my own
At first this did not worry me at all. I decided
that it shouldn’t be too difficult to find somewhere
to live, but that I might get to know my new
surroundings first. I wanted to know where I was, so
I looked around, thinking there might be a sign giving
the name of the place so that I could read it. But I
couldn’t see one, however hard I searched.
I wanted to ask the time, and find out when and
how I had come here. But I was unable to find any way
of telling the time. Then a new thought struck me:
“Time isn’t important. I think I would rather have a
closer look at my surroundings. When it gets dark,
I’ll find somewhere to stay.” So I went to a nearby
wood, where there were some benches. I sat down and
began to watch people passing by, walking through the
wood. They were walking at a leisurely pace and paid
little attention to me. One or two threw me a casual
smile, but beyond that they took no notice of me.
I listened attentively, for I wanted to know what
they were talking about and also find out what dialect
they were speaking. Then I realized with amazement
that they weren’t talking in German at all. I had
grown up near Berlin, I remembered that clearly, and I
had wanted to know whether these people spoke with a
Berlin accent. Far from it, they were speaking
foreign languages. I recognized French, and there
were other languages of which I was totally ignorant.
“If I’m not in Germany” I thought, “where can I be?
Perhaps I’m at an international spa, where people
speak all sorts of languages?” But I simply couldn’t
remember getting ready for such a journey. I felt
decidedly blank, and said to myself, “Well, I shall
just have to wait and see.”

“The Corner Stone” mentioned above is a valuable
sourcebook and contains many other post mortem
accounts from various sources in France and Germany,
including the work of Johannes Greber, whom we have
already mentioned in this series, and many of the
trance addresses of the Zurich medium Beatrice
Brunner from 1948 to 1983, the year of her passing.
These were given weekly for the Zurich Spiritual Lodge
in the Concert Hall of the Zurich Academy of Music.
All these addresses and transcripts of other spirit
communications were published in the German language
in the monthly publication Geistige Welt. Hopefully
the archives will become available one day. The
magazine also appeared in English as “The Spiritual
